2S or 3S: picking the pack for a HYPER GO RC car

The single decision that changes how a HYPER GO RC car drives, and the one most often made by accident.

Voltage, capacity and the trade you are making

A two cell pack sits at 7.4 volts nominal, a three cell at 11.1. A brushless motor turns faster for every volt it sees, so moving a HYPER GO RC car from 2S to 3S lifts top speed by roughly a third without touching anything else on the vehicle.

Capacity pulls back the other way. Our 2S Angry Snail holds 3000 mAh, the 3S holds 2000, and the faster setup is covering more ground per minute while it does it. In practice that is twelve minutes against seven.

What the speed control does about it

The 45A unit in the brushless cars reads cell count when you plug the pack in and sets its own low voltage cutoff accordingly. There is no switch and no setup. That single function is what makes the choice reversible: the same car runs either pack on any given afternoon.

The brushed cars do not have this. Their speed control is a 2S device and a three cell pack will damage it.

How the car feels on each

On 2S a HYPER GO RC car is quick but placeable. The throttle has travel in it, the rear end steps out progressively, and a mistake usually means a spin rather than a part.

On 3S the same chassis is urgent. It reaches the end of a car park before you have finished thinking, the steering needs smaller inputs, and the suspension starts asking for proper landings rather than approximate ones. Maximum performance is real, and so is the repair bill behind it.

Wear: what the extra voltage actually costs

Heat is the mechanism. More current through the motor and the speed control means hotter electronics, and hotter electronics age faster. The drivetrain feels it too — the spur gear and the drive shafts see sharper torque spikes, and the shocks see faster landings.

None of that is a reason to avoid 3S. It is a reason to own a spare arm set and to check the motor temperature with the back of your hand between packs.

Which to buy first

If your car came with two 2S packs, buy a third 2S. More driving time teaches more than more speed, and the pack you already have charged is the one that gets used.

If the car came with one pack, buy its twin before anything else. A single pack turns an afternoon into a wait.

Charging: the part that is not optional

The P2050 cable charges 2S packs and the P3050 charges 3S. They are not interchangeable and the failure mode for getting it wrong is fire, not an error message. Label them.

Charge on a hard surface, out of the car, in the room you are in. Let a hot pack cool for twenty minutes first. Store at about half charge if the pack is going in a drawer for more than a week.

Signs a pack has had enough

Swelling is the obvious one: a case that will not sit flat is finished and should not be charged again. Less obvious is a steady drop in run time, or a pack that reaches cutoff far earlier than its twin of the same age.

Two packs, swapped between two cars, settle most arguments about whether the problem is the battery or the vehicle.

Which HYPER GO RC car this applies to

The brushless chassis — the H16BM, the H16PL buggy and the 1/14 scale H14BM — all take either cell count, because the 45A speed control reads the pack and sets its own cutoff. The brushed cars are 2S vehicles and nothing here changes that.

Everything below assumes an RTR car in standard trim: 4WD, the motor and transmitter it left us with, and the protective sealing that is rated for wet grass rather than for a hose.

What else the choice touches

Three cells do not only raise top speed. They raise the load on the drivetrain, the landing speed the suspension has to absorb, the heat in the motor and the wear on the tires. The maximum figure on the box is a 3S number measured on a surface most owners do not have.

If you are going to run three cells regularly, keep a lower arm set and a pair of shocks in the box. The screw kits and the body clips are worth having at the same time, because the parts that break are not the ones that got faster.

Charging, and the mistake worth naming twice

The P2050 cable is for two cells and the P3050 is for three. They are specific to cell count on purpose. Charging a pack with the wrong cable is the one action on this page that is genuinely dangerous rather than merely expensive.

Charge out of the car, on a hard surface, in the room you are in. A pack that came straight off a hot run wants twenty minutes before it goes on a charger.

Which vehicles in the MJX HYPER GO range this covers

Everything we sell runs on one of two cell counts, and the dividing line is the motor. The MJX brushless trucks — the H16BM, the H16PL buggy and the 1/14 scale H14BM — accept either pack, because the speed control reads the voltage when you plug in and sets its own cutoff. The brushed monster truck is a two cell vehicle and no version of it was ever built otherwise.

If the model code on your chassis plate is not one of those, send it to us before you order. Every listing on this site is keyed to that code, and a pack that is two millimetres too long for the tray is the most common thing we get asked to swap.

What the extra cell actually delivers

Three cells give a more powerful push off the line and a higher top speed on a long straight. What they do not give is grip. On loose off-road ground the tires give up before the motor does, and the wheels spin where a two cell pack would have driven forward, so the lap time can go the wrong way even though the car is clearly faster in a straight line.

The second thing the extra cell changes is heat. More current through the same motor and the same speed control means both run hotter, and the protective thermal limit in the electronics will pull power back if you keep the throttle pinned. That is the system working as designed rather than a fault, yet owners read it as a weak battery and buy another one.

Looking after the pack between runs

Charge on the bench, never in the car, and never unattended. Our charging cables are listed by cell count because the balance connector differs; the materials inside them are not interchangeable and a two cell lead forced onto a three cell pack will not balance the third cell. Store at about half charge if the car is going in a cupboard for the winter.

The electronics are sealed against wet grass and light snow, but a battery is not waterproof and a damp tray is the one place water does real harm. Dry it with the shell off. If a pack comes back warm from a run, let it sit for twenty minutes before it goes near a charger.

Reading the label and telling us what you have

Four pieces of data sit on every pack: cell count, capacity, the C rating and the physical size. Photograph that label and the chassis plate together and we can tell you in one reply whether the two belong to each other. Our customer address is in the footer; please put the model code in the first line so the message does not need a second round trip.

We hold nothing personal beyond the thread itself and we do not track you across the site — there is no profile behind the contact form, and the support we offer is the only one of our services that needs your name at all. Owners who have reviewed a pack badly on fitment almost always had a neighbouring version, and one message before ordering would have caught it. Stock on batteries moves in limited batches, so if the filter shows a pack without a price it is a gap between runs rather than a part we have dropped.

Questions we get asked

Can every HYPER GO RC car take a 3S pack?
Every brushless car can — the speed control detects the cell count itself. The brushed cars are 2S only and will be damaged by three cells.
Will 3S void anything?
No. The cars are built for it and the speed figures on the box are 3S numbers. It simply wears the drivetrain and the shocks faster than 2S does.
Can I charge a 3S pack with the 2S cable?
No, and it is the one mistake on this page that is genuinely dangerous. The cables are deliberately specific to cell count.
Does a 3S pack fit the same battery tray?
On the 1/16 cars it does. The 1/14 scale tray is longer, so a pack bought for the H14BM may not drop into an H16BM even though the connector is the same.
Will my transmitter need anything doing?
No. The handset and receiver are unaffected by cell count — the speed control handles all of it.
Will a three cell pack damage my brushed monster truck?
Yes. The brushed speed control in that vehicle has no voltage detection and no cutoff for three cells, and the motor will cook. It is a two cell truck.
Can I run a three cell pack in cold weather?
You can, but expect a shorter run. A cold pack has higher internal resistance and the voltage sags sooner, so the cutoff arrives earlier even though the capacity is unchanged.
